How far away is LTE?

For the past few years we’ve heard cell phone carriers tout the virtues of LTE to us. Most of them have hopped on the bandwagon, and Verizon claims they’ll have North America’s first LTE network running early this year. We haven’t heard many specifics from their testing, but we did hear something about TeliaSonera’s LTE network. The news, unfortunately, was not all good. While they did get a nice, speedy 5Mbps upstream, they couldn’t get the downstream to exceed 12Mbps. With T-Mobile and AT&T looking to release 21Mbps HSPA+ networks, that speed just won’t cut it. Again, that’s not necessarily indicative of Verizon’s network, but it certainly raises concerns about when we’ll actually see them deploy LTE in the States.

Verizon hints at usage-based pricing for LTE network

The prospect of a fourth-generation network and the opportunities it can bring to modern technology has excited many. Verizon Wireless plans to launch the nation’s first commercial LTE 4G network this year, which could kickstart a wave of products developed with Internet capabilities. In fact, that’s what Verizon plans to do. They want third-party developers to create products that can connect to their network. But consumers shouldn’t get too hopeful yet. The connectivity might not justify the cost.

Verizon successfully test LTE connections

Posted on August 14th, 2009 in LTE by Joe

It seemed that Verizon was getting a bit aggressive when it projected launching LTE in 30 markets next year. There’s just so much that needs to happen between then and now, but once against we’re reminded that when Big Red has the competition in its crosshairs, do not underestimate them. As a sign that things are moving along swimmingly, Verizon announced that they successfully made an LTE data connection in Boston and in Seattle. This is just another step for Verizon, which still plans to follow its ambitious schedule.

LTE forecasting: 100 million users by 2014

Posted on July 17th, 2009 in LTE by Joe

The first text LTE markets are just a few months away, so it’s natural that we’d see some forecasting on how many people will adopt the platform. It would seem a lot, since major carriers AT&T and Verizon will go with that standard. DSL Reports brings us two such forecasts. Juniper Research thinks there will be 100 million users by 2014, with enterprise catching on early and consumers adopting at around 2013. Pyramid Research is a bit more optimistic, pegging the number at 136 million. While these forecasts are nice, we still have to see LTE in action. What kind of devices will it host? What’s it going to cost for an average consumer? Until we answer questions like that, forecasting will remain educated guessing.

Will carriers face voice issues with LTE?

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 in LTE by Joe

We know the potential of LTE when it comes to data services — it’s our bread and butter. However, voice issues have become a concern. Why is this relevant to the data end? It could cause carriers to rethink how they’re going to roll out LTE networks. As we’re seeing in Europe, T-Mobile and Orange are slowing their LTE operations because of these concerns. Most people still use their phone for voice, surprisingly enough. This issue certainly needs to be addressed soon, since LTE has reached the point of no return. So how are carriers going to upgrade their networks while still providing a high-quality voice experience?

LTE expected to grow rapidly after deployment

Posted on May 20th, 2009 in LTE by Joe

With test markets for LTE technology right around the bend, there has been an increasing level of hype recently. LTE enthusiasts beam about the technology’s potential, citing speed and coverage of network as two factors which give it an edge unlike other technology. Clearly, they’re trying to put it in a position where it demolishes WiMax right out of the gate. The latest in the hype/propaganda campaign is a forecast which shows that LTE will grow 404 percent between 2010 and 2014. This would put it at a faster pace than its predecessor, 3G (even though LTE is technically still a third generation technology).

Verizon nudges LTE back a bit

Posted on May 14th, 2009 in LTE by Joe

Yes, Verizon still plans to roll out their LTE network in 2010. The only difference is in the specific timing. CEO Lowell McAdam expects his company to get the service up and running in some markets by the second half of the year, rather than early on. The long-term outlook for a nationwide build-out still remains at 2013 or 2014. Yet the a select few markets could see LTE sometime this year, as Verizon wants to set up a test market on the east coast, followed by one on the west coast. These will likely not be larger markets, since they don’t work as well in testing procedures.
