Cablevision’s Wi-Fi service a huge hit

Posted on June 12th, 2009 in Wi-Fi by Joe

We heard when Cablevision picked up subscribers on the strength of Wi-Fi, it became pretty obvious that they were onto something. They rolled out the service on Long Island last September, and expanded it to Connecticut, Westchester/Dutchess county, and along New Jersey Transit train stations. The latest on that front is that users have accessed the network 2 million times since September. Think that’s impressive? They hit the 1 million mark in early April. So yes, things are going smashingly for add-on Wi-Fi.

The offering could get even better, as Cablevision plans to boost Wi-Fi speeds to 3Mbps. That effectively doubles current speeds.

“We are building our WiFi network as a value-added extension of our residential and business-based Internet products, so it’s extremely gratifying to know that our Optimum Online customers have already accessed the Internet more than two million times over Optimum WiFi, and are averaging more than one million free minutes online per day,” said Cablevision senior vice president of wireless product development Kevin Curran in a statement. “Offering fast, free and convenient Internet access, Optimum WiFi has exploded in popularity, as more of our customers are finding and using the network every day.”

It’s so easy to use, and deployed at such convenient locations, that it’s no surprise that the offering is seeing massive success. Expect most major cable companies to hop on board if they haven’t already. This includes Verizon, which poked some fun at Cablevision before enacting plans to offer their own Wi-Fi add-on.
