Unicel Mobile Broadband Wireless Internet Service

Overview

Unicel is a brand of Rural Cellular Corporation, otherwise known as RCC. Founded in 1990, the company is based in Alexandria, Minnesota. RCC, along with Unicel, was accquired by Verizon Wireless in 2007.

Unicel primarily offers service in northern Minnesota, northern New England, Alabama, Mississippi and parts of Washington and Oregon.

Pros: Unicel doesn't charge an activation fee for their service and allows roaming through various partnerships with other carriers.

Cons: Unicel has some of the slowest speeds, both download and upload that we've seen in the carriers we've reviewed. Coupled with a two year contract and only one available modem it's hard for any pros to outweigh the weight of the cons.

Detailed Provider Information

Plans: Unicel offers two wireless internet data plans. The first is the mobile Web 20MB plan. This plan includes 20 megabytes of data for $30.00 per month. Any data usage over 20 dollars per month is charged at 1 cent per kilobyte. The second plan is the Mobile Web Unlimited plan which features unlimited data transfer each month for a flat rate of $65.00 per month. Both plans allow for roaming at a cost of 1 cent per kilobyte.

Customer Service: Customer service for the Unicel Mobile Web is available via a toll free number, email and at any Unicel location. We had to use the customer service number and while we had to wait on hold a few times to have technical questions answered, the representatives were friendly, knowledgeable and easy to understand.

Credit Check: Yes

Contract: Yes, there is a two year contract requirement for the Unicel Mobile Web plans.

Payment Options: Payments can be made for Unicel Mobile Web via automatic payments from your credit card, savings account or checking account. Additionally payments can be made by credit card over the phone, online or at retail locations. Cash and checks are also accepted at retail locations. you can also pay your Unicel bill via regular postal mail.

Bandwidth Restrictions: Speeds range from 60-80 kpbs for download and the upload speed is estimated at 9.6 kbps according to Unicel customer service. That seems a little low to us, but it was the speed we were given after speaking with several customer service representatives. At first they said that the upload speed depended upon your signal, but when pressed for a number, 9.6 kbps is what we were given.

Activation Fee: There is no activation fee to get started with Unicel Mobile Web.

Cancellation Fee: The maximum cancellation fee for discontinuing your Unicel Mobile Web wireless internet service while still under contract is $200.00.

Roaming Charges: Unicel Mobile Web allows roaming but charges 1 cent per kilobyte when off their core network.

Modems and PC Cards: Unicel offers only one modem which is a Kyocera KPC650 PC Card which costs $79.99 to purchase, regardless of which plan you sign up for from their Mobile Web offerings.
